Okay, let’s talk about keeping your possessions safe.

The expectations about secure self storage.

What are the expectations regarding self storage?  It all seems very simple to us.  You, the customers, has the right to expect your belongings, in storage, to be safe from vandalism, theft, and damage.  You are not only paying for a place to store excess items, but it is implied that once you pay your storage fee, those items will be as safe as if they were in your own home.  Is there anyone who disagrees with that assessment? We think not.

Sadly, though, that is not always the case.

The reality about secure self storage.

The fact of the matter is this: Not all storage facilities are safe! There, we’ve said it. The proverbial cat is out of the bag, and we no doubt will make some enemies in making that true claim.

We have seen storage buildings which do not have perimeter fencing. We have seen self-service storage buildings. We have seen all manner of storage units which literally scream “come steal whatever is inside” to would-be thieves. And those companies have the audacity to charge market rates for that storage.

We believe that is just wrong and thus, this article and articles like this one.

The four stages of security in storage facilities.

Here are what we like to call the four stages of security.

First, a fenced perimeter is a must, and that fenced perimeter must have only one entry area.  Any more than that and it is very difficult to monitor the flow of traffic in and out.

Second, all storage units, and the main entry gate, must have personalized access electronic keys.  Nothing that can be duplicated or copied or shared. Each unit, then, cannot be opened by a master key, providing that each unit is safe from idle minds looking for a quick buck.

Third, there must be security monitoring, and this includes cameras showing every nook and cranny in the storage buildings. Blind spots are not acceptable. In addition, those security cameras must be monitored by a real life human being, on a regular basis; otherwise, there is very little reason to even have the cameras.

And, finally, there needs to be a human presence on site, management and staff who regularly walk the grounds, looking for perimeter breaches, looking for anything out of the ordinary.  It is as true today as it was fifty years ago: the greatest deterrent to theft and vandalism is a human presence.

Those, then, are the four levels of security you should be looking for in a self storage business.  Do not settle for less.
