Three ways to determine the size storage unit you need

You have three options in determining the size storage unit you need, and they are:

  • Do a little math
  • Consult the chart
  • Ask the experts

Let’s look at each of these in a bit more detail.

Do a little math

Self Storage units come in a variety of different sizes, varying from 5’x5’ to 20’x30’ in size.  Figuring the square footage is one way to determine what you will need. A 5’x5’ is 25 square feet.  A 20’x30’ is 600 square feet, and so on.

Knowing that, you can measure your items to determine how much room you will need in mini storage.  Remember, and this is key, that a standard storage unit in storage facilities across the country are at least eight feet high, so you have to consider the vertical storage as well as the square footage.

This is particularly important if you are simply storing boxes after a spring-cleaning purge.  Totes, or strong boxes, can be stored on top of each other, meaning your small storage unit will hold quite a few boxes or totes.  If, however, you are storing furniture, your storage options are limited to the square footage for the most part.

Theoretically, a 5’x5’ unit, or a 5’x10’ mini storage unit, can handle a full room of furniture from your house, but we say theoretically because every house is different.

Consult the chart

Every self storage company worth visiting will have an industry chart available on their website, and that chart will tell you, approximately, how much you can fit into the varying sizes of mini storage units. Simply consult that chart and determine the unit size that way.  Remember, again, that those charts are approximations.  In other words, one size does not fit all.

Our suggestion: plan bigger than you think you need.  Chances are you will want to add to the unit, so our recommendation is always to go one size larger than you think you need at that moment. Yes, it will cost you a tiny bit more per month, but it will save you the headache of moving into a larger unit six months down the road of life.

Ask the experts

When in doubt, ask the experts at the storage facility.  It’s their job to know how much will fit into one of their storage units, and they are there to assist.

Our ultimate recommendation: do all three of the above suggestions! That way you are pretty assured to get the unit which best fits your needs.
