Even though literally millions of Americans rent mini storage across the United States, that still leaves tens-of-millions of people who never have, and every twenty years or so a new generation arrives, none of whom have rented a self storage unit.

This article is for all of you, a Newcomer’s Guide To Renting Mini Storage!

We are Blue Mound 287 Self Storage, serving the Greater Fort Worth area, and over the decades we have learned a thing or two about the self storage industry. This, then, is our collection of helpful hints for first-timers. Call us for more information at 817-439-1380.

What size storage space do you need?

This is the #1 question we are asked at Blue Mound.  People know they need self storage, but they have no idea how to gauge how large a storage unit they need.  Units begin at 5’x5’, and go up to 20’x30’, with every size in-between.  How much furniture will fit in a 10’x10’? How many boxes in a 5’x5’?

Luckily for you this has all been worked out for you based on decades of packing and storage experience.  Most high quality storage facilities will have helpful charts which will guide you through the size dilemma. Those charts will give you an estimate of what fits in what size unit.  Remember, these are estimates, but they are also very accurate.  Check out our website, Blue Mound 287 Self Storage, and you’ll find a similar chart on our front page.

What can you expect to pay for mini storage?

You can plan on paying approximately $40 per month for the smallest unit. Prices go up from that base price.  Keep a sharp eye out for deals, however. There are oftentimes moving-in specials, like one month free. There are often military discounts and retirement discounts. Shop around for the best price.

How secure are storage facilities?

Some, like Blue Mound 287 Self Storage, with video monitoring, individual keycard entry, and onsite management, are very secure. Others skimp on security and do not offer very secure self storage.  It’s up to you to find out and determine how much security you want and need for your possessions.

What about boats and cars?

Most quality storage facilities also have storage space for boats and vehicles.  Ask around to find one in your area.

Is there climate controlled storage?

Some have climate controlled storage and some do not. Blue Mound 287 does, and you will pay, on average, an additional $10 per month for it.  In areas with extreme temperature fluctuations, like Texas, you will really be very happy if you opted for climate controlled storage.  The damage done by humidity and oxidation can be extensive.
