The year is 2021. Times are tough for millions of Americans. It is only natural that those looking for a storage unit would be looking for cheap storage units. Everyone wants to save money. Everyone has a limited budget, or so it seems currently.

Let’s talk about security and the importance of it with regards to your possessions i.e. storage items.

The four stages of security

If times are tough for law-abiding, honest citizens, imagine what times are like for the dishonest and less-honorable.  Crime, in many cities across this great country, is on the rise. Burglaries and vandalism have seen sharp increases in 2020 and 2021, and there is no indication that the trend will end anytime soon.  Thus, if you are renting a storage unit, it is imperative that you find a secure storage unit as well as an inexpensive one and yes, those two are not mutually exclusive. It is possible to pay little for much security.

There are four stages of security in storage buildings, and they are:

  • Fencing
  • Locking mechanisms
  • Video monitoring
  • On-site management

Let’s look at each of these in a bit more detail.

Fencing

Secure self storage begins with a fence around the perimeter of the storage business, and on top of that fence there should be barbed-wire.  It is much too easy to climb over a chain-linked fence. Barbed-wire makes it much more difficult.

There should be only one entrance and departure point in that fence, and that point should have a gate which is locked at all times, which brings us to the second level of security.

Locks

When we say locks for mini storage, we are not talking about padlocks. A good set of heavy-duty bolt cutters can do quick work on a padlock. We are talking about computerized key cards for both the main gate and the individual storage units.  Those cards are the only type of “lock” you can count on when doing battle against thieves and vandals.

Video monitoring

Every corner, every aisle, and the entire perimeter of the fencing should be under the watchful camera eye, and that video should be monitored by management. A would-be thief will think twice if they see video cameras stationed throughout the storage buildings.

On-site management

And nothing sends a shiver of fear down the spine of a thief like human beings, on-site, guarding the facility.  If you find self storage where management is on-site, alert, and actively taking part in the security, you have found the biggest deterrent to crime.
