Now, let’s talk about the summer heat.

What is oxidation?

At its most basic level, oxidation is the loss of electrons.  It occurs when an object is subjected to some sort of change.  Perhaps it is easier to explain oxidation by giving some examples.

When you cut open a pear, and leave that pear outside for a few hours, the pear will undergo an oxidizing process. By the time you return, that pear will be mushy and brown, and that change in appearance and texture is due to oxidation.

Leave a vehicle out in the elements, uncared for over the span of a few years, and rust will begin to appear. That rust is the effect of oxidation.

At what temperature does oxidation occur

The answer to this question may not seem satisfying, but oxidation can occur at any temperature.  Oxidation occurs in the Antarctic, and oxidation occurs in the steamy jungles of the Amazon.  Chemical reactions, and the loss of electrons, will always occur in our natural environment.

What is the way to avoid oxidation from occurring?

Having said all that, the best way to avoid the effects of oxidation is to maintain a steady temperature.  Yes, oxidation will still occur, but it will occur at a much-slower rate.  In other words, oxidation does occur at a comfortable sixty-five degrees, but it is happening much slower than if the temperature was at one-hundred degrees.

Applying this to self storage

Our only purpose with this article is to make you all aware of oxidation.  If you use a self storage for clothing, and you live in a temperate climate with few temp extremes, chances are oxidation will not be a factor for you. However, if your summers are steamy, and/or your winters frigid, oxidation will cause damage to your stored items much faster, and in those cases you really need to consider climate controlled storage, especially if you are storing electronics, valuable, collectibles, and the like.  Every single year we hear stories from customers who had damage occur to their belongings because of fluctuating temperatures, damage which could have been avoided by paying a few dollars more for air conditioned storage.

It’s a classic example of “pay now or pay dearly later.”

Do you need climate control self storage?  Only you can answer that. All we can do is give you this information so you can make an informed decision.
