How safe are your possessions at the mini storage you are renting?

Are you aware that there are different levels of security, ranging from very poor to excellent, at various storage facilities?

We are here to explain those various levels of security, and point out what you should look for when renting self storage.  We are Blue Mound 287 Self Storage, serving the Fort Worth area. Call us at 817-439-1380 for more information about the self storage industry.

Now, let’s talk about security!

Fenced and gated

At the bare minimum, a self storage facility should be entirely fenced and it should have only one entry gate. Beyond that, the entry gate should be locked at all time, allowing only paying members access to the storage facility.

This seems like a no-brainer, right?  You would be amazed at the number of self storage companies we have seen which were not even fenced. We have seen self storage facilities which did not have a gate closing the access point. They might as well have hung up a sign saying “Free Stuff Available, Come Rob Us!”

Every single storage building should be fenced and gated, period!

Personalized access in and out

In the mini storage industry, keys are out, and personalized computer access cards are in. The reason why? Keys can be copied.  Personalized computer access cards cannot be copied.

Padlocks on the doors?  Padlocks can be cut easily with padlock-cutters. Is that the kind of security you are looking for? Security which can be defeated by anyone with a twenty-buck pair of padlock cutters?

There should be a personalized access keycard allowing you through the one main gate, and personalized access cards for each storage locker. That is the optimum situation for the locking or a storage unit.

Video monitoring

Look up! Do you see video cameras at key locations throughout the storage buildings?  You should!  And not only that, but those video cameras should be monitored by a management employee, and not only that but that video monitoring should be connected to local law enforcement.  And not only that, but that video monitoring should occur 24/7, 365!

This is a highly-competitive industry, with prices comparable across the spectrum no matter which city you live; why settle for second-best when it comes to secure self storage?

On-site management

Believe it or not, we have seen self storage situations where there was no one managing the site. There was just a sign informing the public to call a certain number if interested in renting a min storage locker.

True story!

Blue Mound 287 Self Storage has management on-site, real, live people who can handle problems as they arise.  You should expect nothing less no matter who you are renting mini storage from.
