Getting the biggest bang for your buck, that’s what this article is about: how to choose the best affordable self storage facility.

What size do you need?

Storage spaces range in size from the smallest, which is 5’x5’, to the largest, which is 20’x30’ in size.  Any experienced storage unit manager can show you a chart which will help you decide which storage unit you need for your belongings. There is one such chart on the home page of our website.

Remember that you not only have the length and width to consider, but you also have the vertical. Most storage units are at least eight feet tall, so well-boxed items can be stacked quite high, increasing the amount you can stuff into your mini storage.

Our suggestion: measure the items you need to storage and choose the size of the storage unit accordingly.  Of course, if you are storing an entire home’s worth of belongings, just rent the largest unit and don’t bother measuring. A 20’x30’s storage unit can literally store all the belongings in a four-bedroom home.

Do you need air conditioning?

In a climate like Fort Worth, Texas, we recommend climate controlled storage.  The oxidation which occurs from the extreme heat of summer can be very damaging to valuables. This is not an attempt to “sell up” on our part.  It is our recommendation based on years in this business.

Even in moderate temperatures, oxidation can damage electronics and certain collectibles, so be aware of that when choosing a storage unit.

Can you afford the added security?

This shouldn’t even be a question asked.  Quality storage facilities have excellent security, and you don’t pay a penny more for it.  A fenced storage yard is a must.  A secure keyed front gate should be expected.  Key car security for each unit would be nice.  Video monitoring should be expected as well, and on-site management is a nice bonus.

And none of that should cost you extra!

Do a price check between a highly-secure storage facility and a not-so-secure facility.  Chances are the prices will be basically the same, so why would you settle for less-security?

A $40 storage unit gets the same amount of security at Blue Mound 287 as a $200 unit, and that’s what you should expect no matter when you rent a mini storage unit.
