We hear this question quite often during the week: “Should I pay extra for climate controlled storage?”

That’s the question we will tackle in this article, about climate control self storage. We are Blue Mound 287 Self Storage, serving the Greater Fort Worth, Texas, area. Call us at 817-439-1380 for more information if you don’t find the answers to your questions in this article.

Why climate controlled storage?

The whole point behind climate controlled storage is not to keep you cool when you are visiting your storage unit; no, the point is to protect your valuables from the effects of extreme climates.

Extremely cold temperature can harm your belongings. Extremely cold temperatures can harm your belongings.  It all has to do with the science of life, and oxidation, and all that causes rust, and moisture, and expansion of parts, and contraction of parts. Without going too deeply into the science, let it suffice to say that extreme temperatures will change the molecular composition of some items, and a short list of those items would include electronics, collectibles, wood items, and items made from delicate fibers.

In other words, a majority of the items generally stored in a mini storage.

There really is no doubt that climate controlled storage is the best storage for a majority of stored items, but can you afford it?

The extra cost of climate controlled storage

Climate controlled storage generally costs between $5-$20 extra per month, depending upon the size of the self storage unit.  If you are on a fixed budget, even an extra ten bucks per month can seem exorbitant. We understand that! But can you afford to replace the items damaged by oxidation? Can you even replace family heirlooms which are damaged? Only you can answer those questions.  Is it worth it to you to pay a little extra for the increased peace of mind it will deliver?

Let’s break it down.  Let’s say you are storing your baseball card collection in a storage unit. Let’s say that collection has a collector’s value of $5,000.  Now let’s say those Texas summer temperatures hit 100 degrees, as they always do.  Those baseball cards will most likely be damaged using regular mini storage.  You could have paid an extra $100 for climate controlled storage, but because you didn’t you lost thousands in card value.

Is it worth it?

Only you can determine if you need it

We can’t answer that question for you. All we can do is share our experience with you.  If you are storing extra furniture for a year, chances are excellent that you do not need climate controlled storage. Or if you are just storing boxes of home “stuff,” easily replaceable “stuff,” you probably don’t need the added assurance which comes from climate control.  But important, highly-valuable items? Our recommendation is yes, you should pay the extra for the peace of mind it provides.
